Millville
Leon Williams
May 25, 1951 – August 27, 2025
Leon Williams was born on May 25, 1951, at Bridgeton Hospital to Beulah Gates Williams. He grew up on the west side of Millville with his mother and brother, John Wayne Williams, in a tight-knit community where neighbors were like family. Raised by a hardworking single mother who spent long hours at Millville Manufacturing, Leon learned early the value of perseverance and loyalty. His brother was both his best friend and a father figure, and together with cousins and neighborhood kids, they built bonds that lasted a lifetime. His cousin, Sharon (Blizzard) Haines-Ringler, he thought of and loved like a sister.
Leon was full of mischief and heart from the start. At thirteen, he nearly lost his life diving off the Main Street Bridge and hitting a shopping cart underwater - saved only by his quick-thinking friend, Jimmy Gandy. In Millville high school, he was the class clown, dyeing his hair green and once helping place the vice principal's Volkswagen on the school steps. His mother had her hands full, but his humor and warmth always shone through.
Throughout his life, Leon worked hard. From stocking shelves at age eight in the McCrinsky brothers' butcher shop to juggling jobs at ACME, the Levoy Theatre, and Space Port Arcade, he did whatever it took to help out. Thanks to Ed Salmon, he began what became a 37-year career with the City of Millville's Streets and Roads Department, eventually becoming a Motor Broom Operator. He also played the "gorilla" in a carnival side show and worked many summers with local amusement companies.
In 1983, Leon married Deborah Corson Williams, and together they raised two children, Andrea (Bertulis) and Andrew Williams - both born on the same day, exactly three years apart. Andrea later gave Leon his greatest treasures: his granddaughters Aria and Aurora. The birth of his first granddaughter came on the same day Leon received a heart and kidney transplant, an unforgettable moment of renewal and hope. His children and grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life.
Leon was an avid fisherman who loved the peace of the water and the company of good friends. He enjoyed movies, reading, traveling, and spending time with loved ones. After retiring, he became a regular at the Queen Diner with his morning coffee crew - until his battle with throat cancer made communication more difficult.
Leon gave back generously to his community. He was a longtime member of the Millville Elks and served in countless civic roles: 4-H volunteer for over 12 years, Trustee for the Cumberland County Fair Association, assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 57, Council 18 Trustee and Shop Steward for 25 years, and a VIP blood donor who gave more than 13 gallons to the Red Cross. He helped his son raise a seeing-eye dog that went on to become a guide dog for the blind and supported youth through PAL and Millville Babe Ruth World Series.
Leon faced more hardships than most but met them with grace and humor that inspired everyone around him. He was a fighter to the end - body weary, but soul and spirit unwavering.
To his children (Andrea Bertulis and Andrew Williams), grandchildren (Aria and Aurora Bertulis), his brother's wife (Sandra Williams) and her children and grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, half siblings and his wife's family, and friends: Smile when you think of him. Know how deeply he loved you, how fiercely he fought to stay with you, and how much your presence meant in his life.
His body may have quit - but his heart and soul live on.
