Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Colonel John Alfred Caputa as he was surrounded by his loving family on the night of August 21, 2018.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 59 years Linda, his son David and his wife Linda, and three grandchildren: Matthew, Allyson, and Kristin.

John was a man of layered strengths. He was born in San Francisco, where he spent his formative years attending the University of California Berkeley and preparing himself for a beautiful life ahead.  He met his wife Linda DeSerio in 1959 and joined the United States Marine Corp where he climbed in rank to Colonel and conquered all challenges placed before him.

His career in the service was filled with stories of adventure, tales of bravery, and the opportunity to call so many different places home. John served in Okinawa, Vietnam, Camp LeJeune, Quantico and El Torro just to name a few.  He proudly and bravely served his country for 29 years with his career culminating as the first ever appointment from the United States Army to have a Marine supervise the DSPC. His many commemorations include the Legion of Merit, National Defense Service Medal, and the Korean Defense Service medal among many others.

John was a fierce reader, studied music, reveled in the arts, and spent so many moments teaching those around him. He was gifted with intellect and subsumed with a generosity that spread with every bit of advice he shared with those around him. John frequently and anonymously supported numerous charities, orphanages, libraries, schools and sometimes strangers. Together John and Linda mentored, fostered, and sponsored families from a variety of countries.

As a gentlemen John was trusted; as a father he was relied upon and cherished, and as a grandfather he was loving, supportive, and steady as a rock. The most enduring quality that John had was the ferocity for which he loved his wife and partner, Linda.  Her heart weighs heavy, but through John's lasting courage and legacy, Dolly, along with the rest of his family, will continue to keep the faith.

We ask for your thoughts, prayers, and consideration while we mourn the loss of such a tremendous individual.

A public memorial service will be held at Barr Funeral home of Millville on Monday, August 27 th at 11:00am with visitation at 10:30.  Private burial will be held immediately after the service.
