George L. Bowen, age 75 of Millville, passed away Friday afternoon at Inspira Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born in Bridgeton, George served in the Army during the Vietnam War and settled in Millville after he was discharged.  In 1968 he married Doris Branin and they would share 52 happy years together. George had worked as an engineer for West Company and most recently Jarvis Industries. He loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and as any die-hard fan would, he purchased season tickets each year. He also enjoyed NASCAR and never missed a race.

George was a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War who was extremely proud of his service. He put himself in harms way many times and among other medals he has a Purple Heart and two Air Medals. As part of a helicopter crew, they flew directly into enemy fire in order to rescue their fellow soldiers. He was a true war hero.

George is survived by his wife of 52 years, Doris; son Steven and his wife Lisa; daughter, Michele Kirksey and her husband Steve Park; brother, Robert Elkins and his wife Kathy; nephew, Bobby Elkins, his grandchildren, whom he adored, Shaelynn and Connor Bowen, sister-in-law, Linda Branin, brothers-in-law, Roger and his wife Maryann, Ralph and his wife Grace, Jerry, and Mike Branin; and good friends, Bruce and Maryann Varesio and their children, Kelly Edelman and Shane Varesio.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend George's viewing from 10 AM to 11 AM on Friday, December 18, 2020 at Barr Funeral Home, 2014 E. Main Street, Millville. A funeral service for family will be held at 11AM.  A Graveside Service will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
